The Committee

“The Committee” looks after all the practicalities of running our church, such as building maintenance, finance and other things that need done in and around church.
The Committee members consist of church members who have been nominated by the congregation, entrusted to make decisions on their behalf. It is broken up into subcommittee groups consisting of of; Maintenance, Building and Audio Fund, General Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Catering, Publications, Session and Health and Safety. We meet once a month on a Thursday evening, and the meetings usually last a couple of hours. As you can imagine, we have a lot to discuss and I never really appreciated what goes on, “behind the scenes”, until I got involved with the Committee. Our minister keeps us all “in check” if our discussions get too heated, but we all have a common goal in ensuring that our church building is a safe place to be, that our bills are being paid on time and that any broken equipment or furniture is fixed etc.

With the world around us constantly changing, we have to try and keep up, but at Garnerville we have always enjoyed a challenge; we financed the build of our church manse when it seemed impossible and we have recently updated our sound system. Our 60th Birthday is coming up in 2010, which will set us another challenge, with lots of functions etc to be organised. As you can see, we are a busy bunch.

I have been the Committee Secretary for nearly four years now. On my 1st night as a new Committee member I brought a notebook with me to scribble down some notes and before I knew it, I was being nominated as the secretary, (that’ll teach me).
